Want a career ripped straight from today's headlines? Think about putting your accounting or economics degree to work at the US Securities and Exchange Commission as a compliance examiner. Working either from Washington, DC, or one of 11 cities, an examiner might spend the day reviewing a mutual fund's portfolio, a broker dealer's sales activities or a multimillion-dollar company's financials.

In a search for violations of securities laws or weaknesses in company compliance procedures and controls, an examiner does background research, on-site examinations, interviews with officers, tours of operations, or review and analysis of company records.

If you're still in school, you can get a taste of this career by doing a summer internship at the SEC.
